Foxwoods Casino Dealers Join UAW

Monday November 26, 2007

The UAW announced that casino dealers at Foxwoods voted in favor of union representation. The vote, held Saturday November 24, was 60 percent in favor of joining the union. Foxwoods is the largest private employer in Connecticut. About 2,600 dealers and dual-rate dealers will be represented by the new bargaining unit.

The Foxwoods Resort Casino is owned by the Mashantucket (Western) Pequot Tribe and operated as a tribal venture. The casino management argued to the National Labor Relations Board that the tribe's sovereign immunity meant that the National Labor Relations Act did not cover the resort. However in a decision on October 24 the Board ruled that the enterprise was covered and allowed the election.

The Foxwood Resort employees join more than 6,000 gaming workers in Michigan, Rhode Island and New Jersey who are represented by the UAW.
